JEE Main and Advanced Chemistry coaching for Tamil Nadu students

Chemistry is often the subject that decides a JEE rank: it is the quickest to score in JEE Main and the most conceptual in JEE Advanced. Here is how the two exams differ and how to prepare for both.

JEE Main Chemistry pattern

ItemJEE Main Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech)
Chemistry questions25 = 20 MCQs + 5 numerical-value
ChoiceNone: all 25 are compulsory
Chemistry marks100 of 300
Marking+4 correct · −1 wrong · 0 unanswered
Whole paper75 questions in 3 hours, computer-based, two sessions a year

NTA publishes the pattern in each year's information bulletin. Check the current bulletin, especially the marking rule for numerical questions, before your attempt.

A well-prepared student can finish JEE Main Chemistry in 35–45 minutes. That saved time is what lets you attempt the harder Mathematics and Physics questions, which is why Chemistry quietly decides many ranks.

What changes in JEE Advanced

JEE Advanced is taken by the top performers in JEE Main. It has two compulsory papers of 3 hours each, and its question types and marking change from year to year. The chemistry is the same syllabus, tested much more deeply.

AreaJEE MainJEE Advanced
InorganicClose to NCERT text, facts and trendsReasoning behind trends, structures and exceptions
OrganicStandard named reactions and productsMulti-step sequences, mechanism and stereochemistry together
PhysicalDirect formula applicationTwo or three concepts in one numerical
Question styleSingle correct and numerical valueMultiple correct, paragraph, matching and integer types, varying each year

From State Board to JEE

Many strong Tamil Nadu students meet the same wall in Class 11: the topics look familiar, but the questions are harder. The gap is in problem depth and speed, not in the list of chapters. Three habits close it:

  • NCERT first, then beyond. Master the NCERT text, then extend each topic with JEE-level problems. NCERT is the floor for JEE Main and the starting point for Advanced.
  • Mechanism over memory in organic. Electron movement explains products, so you do not need to remember hundreds of reactions separately.
  • Timed practice from the start. Solve sets against the clock every week, not just in the final months.
Understanding in Tamil and practising in English is often the fastest way to make this jump. Concepts settle quickly, and the exam language becomes familiar through daily practice.

A two-year roadmap

  1. Class 11, first half: mole concept, atomic structure, periodicity, chemical bonding and GOC. These five chapters support almost everything that follows.
  2. Class 11, second half: thermodynamics, equilibrium, redox and hydrocarbons, with weekly mixed tests.
  3. Class 12, first half: solutions, electrochemistry, kinetics, coordination compounds, d- and f-block, and the organic chapters from haloalkanes to amines.
  4. Class 12, second half: revision of both years, previous-year JEE Main papers by chapter, then full mock papers. Students aiming for Advanced add multi-concept problem sets.

Scoring the numerical questions

  • Write units at every step. Most wrong numerical answers are unit errors, not concept errors.
  • Read the rounding instruction. Enter the value exactly as asked, for example to the nearest integer.
  • Know your logarithms. log 2 ≈ 0.301, log 3 ≈ 0.477 and ln x = 2.303 log x cover most pH, kinetics and electrochemistry questions.
  • Leave blanks wisely. There is no choice among the five numerical questions, but you can leave one unanswered. A blank scores 0 and a wrong entry can cost a mark, so enter a value only after checking that it is reasonable.

How Elementize coaches JEE Chemistry

Our JEE course follows the two-year roadmap above, with concept classes, print-ready notes and tests in JEE Main pattern, plus Advanced-level problem sets for students aiming at the IITs. Detailed solutions show the concept, each step, and the trap the question was built around. See our interactive Reaction Mechanisms note for a taste of how organic chemistry is taught.

Common questions

Can I prepare for NEET and JEE together?

For Chemistry, yes. The syllabus overlaps almost entirely. JEE needs more numerical depth, NEET needs closer reading of NCERT. Our NEET Chemistry and JEE courses share the same concept classes.

Do you teach Physics for JEE too?

Yes. Physics is taught by our Physics lecturer, Naveenkumar Saravanan, in the same bilingual format.

Is coaching online?

Yes. Classes, recordings, notes and tests are on the Elementize app, so you can join from anywhere in Tamil Nadu.

How do I ask about batches and fees?
